Notes
Four original sample models of the Mercedes 300SL from the personal property of Marcel Van Cleemput, chief designer for Corgi (1954-83). Planned for release into Woolworths but never actually put into production, these samples are extremely scarce! Each Mercedes is made of a very simple casting and each is 5ins (13cms) in length. A little piece of Corgi history, these samples were made during 1959 and were intended to retail for 1/6d. They are basic models with one piece moulding finished in bright colours; indeed, their design could not have been more simple:
Basic but instantly recognizable as Mercedes with the three pointed star clearly cast. The wheels are one-piece high density polythene, pushed over pre-headed axles. Condition ranges from excellent-very near mint, these sample models are in all original condition with only the occasional little mark to the shiny paint finish.
Charming and so scarce – this is a little piece of early Corgi history. Unique and authentic items.
